Sicilianu Dizziunariu

Below is a list of Sicilian words and phrases, in no particular order. There will be a feminine, masculine and plural spelling of each word if applicable, (F)(M)(P).

Avanti- onword

Arraggiatu- angry, irate, bothered. Arraggiatu(M), Arraggiata (F), Arraggiati (P).

Annatura- gait, pace. Annaturi (P).

Amuri- love.

Abbanniari- proclaim, advertise, auction, publish.

Abbannunari- abandon, desert, forsake, leave, neglect.

Abbastanza- enough, fairly, rather, sufficient.

Aspetta/aspettari- wait/waiting.

Ancora- still. Also means ancor.

Adunca/Accussi- So. More commonly we use Allura or Quindi allura for so and so then, we also use allura as a filler word when we're thinking of something else to say.

Allura Chi- so what.

Basta- enough/ that's enough. Shortened version of Abbastanza.

Babbu- stupid or foolish.

Stupidu- stupid.

Aria- air.

Unni putemu truvari quarchi cosa di manciari? where can we get something to eat?

Unni vulemu manciari? where do we want to eat?

Tutti/Tuttu- everyone/ everything. Tutti sunnu ccà- everyone's here. Tuttu va beni- everything is fine.

Havi nu gustu bonu?- does it taste good?

Cena- dinner. Chi c'è pi pranzu?- what's for dinner?

Pumadoru- tomato. li pumadori- tomatoes.

Cipuḍḍa- onion/onions.

Agghiu- garlic. Spiddu d'agghiu/Spicchi d'agghiu- garlic clove/ garlic cloves.

Basilicò- basil.

Pitrusinu- parsley.

Ariganu- oregano.

Cuminu- cumin.

Maiurana- marjoram.

Sali- salt.

Pimentu/ Pipi- pepper.

Pimentu nìuru- black pepper. 

Pimentu jancu- white pepper.

Pimentu di caienna- cayenne pepper.

Pimentu russu- red bell pepper.

Pimentu virdi- green bell pepper.

Cauda- hot.

Calura- heat.

Friddu- cold.

Friscu- cool.

Camiḍḍinu- bowl. 

Cucchiara- spoon.

Broccia- fork. Furchetti- forks.

Cuteḍḍu- knife. Cuteddi- knives.

Scusa- sorry. 

Mi Dispiaci- i'm sorry.

Mi scusassi- excuse me, you could also say Mi Scusi.

Apertu/ Apritu- open/ opened.

Chiusu- close, closed.

Tàvula/Tavuli- table/tables.

Cucina- kitchen.

cocu- cook.

Cuocu- chef/cook.

Fimmina/Fimmini- woman/women.

Omu/ Omini- man/men.

Picciotta/e- girl/girls.

Picciottu- boy.

Carusi- boys.

Picciriḍḍu/Picciriḍḍi- child/children.

Caciu/Furmaggiu- cheese.

Àrvuru/Àrvuli- tree/trees.

Jardinu- garden. shounds like "yardeenoo" remember J is pronounced like an I. 

Pollu- chicken. Gallu- rooster. Gallina- hen. Gaddini- chickens.

Jencu- beef.

Bistecca- steak.

Carni/Carne- flesh/meat. Either word can be used since they sound about the same, i personally use Carni.

Vacca/Vacchi- cow/cows.

Bufalu- buffalo.

Toru- bull.

Aceḍḍu/Aceddi- bird/birds.

Cchiù- more.

Menu- less.

Mità- half.

Fora- outside/out.

Nesciri- get out.

Nni Jemu- let's go. 

Cchiù tardu- later. or you could just say Tardu.

Granni- large.

Mediu- medium.

Nicu- small/little.

Un Pocu/Pocu- a little bit. Nna Picca- a little. Un pocu cchiù- a little more.

Assai- a lot. Assai di Cchiù- a lot more.





Scustumatu- immoral/ desolate person.
